When I got to Stone’s apartment, which resided above the restaurant like a loft, I was immediately aware of how opposite the two brothers were.

I never would have guessed them to be brothers at all if Kai hadn’t shown me his grimoire and explained it all to me.

Stone’s apartment had a very dark, Bohemian look to it, and smelled of patchouli and hookah. This place looked nothing like the earthy and natural home that Kai had made within his self-constructed garden. Stone’s loft was more like some sort of forbidden fruit, like a lair that was too intoxicating to resist even though you knew you shouldn’t set foot inside the place.

No sooner had I gotten inside, than Stone wanted me to show him some of the edible concoctions I could make.

“How about a potion-infused cocktail?” he asked as he walked me straight through the living room and into the kitchen.

I had wanted to take a look around at the apartment I would be staying in for a few days, but it seemed like Stone wanted to get straight to work.

“Don’t you think it’s a little early for a cocktail?” I asked.

“No. It’s never too early for a cocktail,” he countered. “Besides, you can make one that bestows a power instead of a hangover.”

“I don’t exactly know how my kitchen magic works,” I said with a short and frustrated pout. “I haven’t quite figured it out yet.”

“That’s okay, we can figure it out together. You can just do what you always do—mix things together that come to your mind and see what it yields. That’s what you should be writing down inside your own grimoire.”

“What is?”

“All of the things that you create and what they do. You should note them down in your grimoire so that you can keep a collection and reference of your spells. That way when you come up with a new enchantment—which you seem to do nearly every day—then you will remember them all for the future.”

“And so that I can share them with other people, like you perhaps” I eyed him so that he knew I was on to him. He didn’t give a shit whether or not I had a recipe collection. He just wanted to make sure that I put the magic spells on paper so that he could get at them. As long as they were only inside of my head floating around unrecognizable even to me, Stone couldn’t get them.

“Let’s just make the cocktails,” I said as I tried to draw attention away from the idea of me cataloguing all of my magical recipes for him to use.

I looked around his kitchen and helped myself to several herbs, then looked inside his fridge and cabinets to see if anything in particular jumped out at me. Within a matter of moments, I was busily muddling herbs and dry gin into a tasty cocktail.

“What does it do?” Stone asked when I was finished pouring the mint green-colored cocktail into two clear glasses.

“I guess we’ll see,” I smiled as I took a sip from my glass.
